Gateway to the Ocean, Freedom, and Immortality: Exploring Cockspur Island

A lot of well-documented history has happened here.  Bright green rolling hills dotted with palmetto palms surround a fort that overlooks the ocean’s wide-sweeping entry into the Savannah River.  Enter a labyrinth of history, deep scars in the masonry, bombarded by the wrath of man, but somehow spared by nature and time.  Though the names of soldiers whose descendants walk among us today are immortalized in smooth marble, there are also mysteries that may never be solved, unknown Americans whose very hands left their marks in the fort’s structure itself.  The pentagonal Fort Pulaski is like a prism which at any given time split history into defeat and victory; obsolescence and progress; and ultimately, despair for those loyal to their oaths, and hope for those who despite being condemned, still fought for a new age.  The duality of the fort gives its visitors a reason to return and find something new each time.  Join Stella and myself as we explore the tunnels, prisons, embrasures, and secret trees, sniffing out the stories of this monument that stood the test of time.
